What Is HypnoBirthing?
HypnoBirthing The Mongan Method is a 5 week evidence based childbirth education course based on the belief that for a healthy woman having a baby, pregnancy is normal and natural.
HypnoBirthing is designed to help couples understand their options for birth so they feel excited and prepared.
It is a tool kit of physical and mental skills which empower couples to welcome the events of labour and birth, however they unfold.
HypnoBirthing does not offer pain free births but believes that comfortable birthing is a possibility for the majority of women who practice the lide-long skills. It teaches a very simple set of of very logical steps that every woman should know about that will make a very big difference to the birthing process

How Does It Work?
HypnoBirthing is based on more than just a positive mindset, it is based on physiology. The modern woman is now conditioned to believe that birth is stressful, terrrible and painful from persistent negative media images and birth stories from well-intentioned friends and family.
If the mind is holding onto any fearful messages (percieved or actual) during birth, the brain and nervous system pick up these signals and the body triggers the release of the sympathetic nervous system - the fear and flight zone - that affects the normal functioning of the uterus. This muscle, that should be contracting or surging and gently opening and moving the baby down, instead closes to protect the baby from a stressful environment that is unsafe to be born in. In turn, the blood flow that which would normally be supplying the the uterus with oxygen and allowing normal functioning of the uterus, is shunted to other parts of the body that are important for running and fighting, neither which are appropriate for birth! This leave the uterus oxygen deprived and it doesn't function properly, causing unnecessary pain.
On a biochemical level, there are changes that happen in the sympathic zone. Stress hormones come cruising through the body called catecholamine's blocking the body's natural pain relieving endorphins that are the feel good hormones allowing us to feel pleasure and block pain.
HypnoBirthing allows women to re-conditon their thought patterns so they feel calm and confident throughout birth. With regular practice listenign to mediatation tracks, along with positive birth affirmations and self-hypnosis techniques, the mind believes that birth is normal and the new messages become part of the belief system allowing women to connect with their innate intelligence about birth.
HypnoBirthing also teaches special breathing and visualisation and deepenign techniques to send messages to to the woman's brain that they are calm and safe, allowing the birthing muscles to function normally, maximising their efficiency.
As the sensations of birth get stronger and more powerful, so does the release of endorphins, and women are able to go deeper and deeper into a wonderful space where her body and the baby do the work together.
What Is My Partner's Role?
Dads often begin the HypnoBirthing course a bit sceptical and unsure, particularly because the name can sound a bit 'hippy'! They are quickly excited as they come to learn how they can play an important role in the birth of their baby.
HypnoBirthing teaches dads how to read a woman's body langualge, assist relaxation and massage, protect the birthing environment to keep it private and safe, help with changing positions, support the breathing techniques and liase with medical and midwifery staff.
The dads love the meditations just as much as the women and feel connected to the whole experience
When Should We Start?
It is recommended that you start the classes between 20-32 weeks of pregnancy, as this gives you the time to complete the 5 week course, absorb the content, practice the techniques and implement the skills into you daily life before the birth! You will then instinctively know how to work with your body and release any tension, fear or stress. If you attend the classes after 32 weeks you will still gain many benefits from the training.
